ENDOCRINE DISRUPTION

The body’s endocrine system is a regulatory system dependent upon glands that release hormone signals into the blood for delivery to targeted tissues and organs.  The simplistic diagram above indicates how the body’s metabolism is regulated in response to blood sugar levels. The endocrine system monitors stimulus and responds accordingly, a homeostatic mechanism.

Obviously diet and the endocrine system work hand in hand to regulate the body’s metabolism or use of energy.  A diet too high in carbohydrates, especially non-complex carbohydrates is concerning.  The American diet, too high in processed and ultra-processed foods is such a diet and it contributes to an American population presenting high rates of obesity.  Obesity predisposes adults to metabolic syndrome, Type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.

Endocrine disruptors released from synthetic chemicals found in plastics, detergents, flame retardants, cosmetics, toys, food, and water alter the endocrine messaging system. These synthetic compounds may decrease or increase hormone levels circulating in the blood, mimic the body’s natural hormones, or alter production of hormones. Disruption to the system has negative ramifications for metabolism, development, reproduction, neurologic and immune function. By altering regulation of stimulus and response, homeostasis becomes compromised.
